Are Bowflex SelectTech 552 and 1090 dumbbells safe to use right now?
There is an active CPSC recall dated June 2025 for both the 552 and 1090, due to weight plates potentially dislodging during use. If you own either model, check your serial number on the CPSC site and contact Bowflex for a refund or replacement. We do not currently recommend buying new units until post recall reliability is documented.
What is the single best adjustable dumbbell if money is no object?
For most people, the SMRTFT Nüobell 80lb. It offers the closest feel to a real dumbbell, the fastest weight change, and a wide range. If your priority is decade long durability rather than feel, the REP QuickDraw is the stronger pick because it is drop tested and carries a lifetime warranty on the steel.
What is the best budget adjustable dumbbell under $300?
Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set. It is the cleanest budget option on the market right now. You give up 2.5 lb increments and premium feel, but the mechanism is simple and there is no pattern of widespread failures in the community.
Do adjustable dumbbells break easily?
It depends entirely on the mechanism. Screw based systems like Ironmaster almost never fail. Pin and lock systems like PowerBlock have a strong decade long reliability record. Dial based systems like Bowflex and NordicTrack carry more failure risk, which the June 2025 Bowflex recall reflects. If durability is your top concern, go with Ironmaster, REP QuickDraw, or PowerBlock.
Can you drop adjustable dumbbells?
Only the REP QuickDraw is officially drop tested. Ironmaster is bulletproof by virtue of its screw locked steel construction and typically survives drops without mechanical damage. Every other major adjustable on the market should not be dropped at all. Dropping dial or twist lock adjustables from shoulder height is the fastest way to shorten their life.
How much weight do I actually need?
For general fitness, 50 lb per hand covers most exercises. For intermediate strength training, 60 to 80 lb is a better ceiling. For advanced lifters, you want 90 lb plus, which points to the Nüobell 80, Bowflex 1090 (after recall resolution), PowerBlock Pro EXP, or Ironmaster with expansion kits.
Which brands never require review units or sponsorship to be recommended?
We evaluate every product in this guide independently. None of the manufacturers featured here are sponsors or have influence over our rankings. We purchase products or rely on transparent long term owner reports. If that changes, we will disclose it prominently.
Why is your ranking different than other review sites?
Most mainstream review sites still rank the Bowflex SelectTech 552 as a top value pick without a prominent warning about the active June 2025 recall. We cannot do that. Our rankings also include Ironmaster and additional PowerBlock variants that round out the field, we weight long term owner data over first impressions, and we apply a consistent rubric rather than inventing a superlative category for every brand.
